Devi Laya
Classical Bharatanatyam
Laya is Devi’s space for learning and experiencing Classical Bharatanatyam. Our classes focus on developing strong fundamentals through disciplined training, artistic sensitivity, and reverence for tradition.
Overview
A Practice of Rhythm and Line
Bharatanatyam is a complete classical art that brings together movement, rhythm, expression and discipline. Through regular practice, it develops not only technical skill but also a deeper awareness of the body, mind and the art itself.
Bharatanatyam is approached here as both rigorous training and living cultural expression. Each session emphasises posture, rhythm, gesture, musicality, and the quiet discipline that allows form to become expressive.

Offerings
Training, Workshops, and Performance
We believe a strong dancer is built from the ground up. Alongside technique, our approach places importance on developing strength, mobility, balance and body awareness as an integral part of Bharatanatyam training.
The Laya offering brings together regular study, immersive learning, and artistic presentation so students can engage with Bharatanatyam in more than one way.
Foundational Training
Our regular studio classes are currently designed for beginners and focus on building strong fundamentals from the very beginning.
Students are introduced to body conditioning, basic adavus, rhythm, posture, alignment and expressive movement through a structured progression, creating a solid foundation for continued learning.
Workshops
Alongside our regular classes, Laya hosts workshops led by respected dancers, musicians, scholars and practitioners.
These workshops offer opportunities to explore specialised aspects of Bharatanatyam and the wider traditions that enrich it—from technique, abhinaya and nattuvangam to music, literature, costume, history and performance practice.
Immersive Learning Experiences
Beyond the classroom, Laya creates opportunities to engage more deeply with the living traditions of Bharatanatyam through curated learning experiences, interactions with practitioners and cultural explorations.
Performances
Laya celebrates Bharatanatyam through curated performances that inspire appreciation, provide learning opportunities and connect audiences with this rich artistic tradition.
